Build Better Nurse-Patient Connections

Find out more about how to improve the nurse-patient connection in this new white paper, The Nurse-Patient Connection, including the four major obstacles that get in the way. Nurses struggle with these job performance challenges:

1) allocating time

2) EHR difficulties

3) physical strain

4) unsuitable workstations

There are a number of proven ways to overcome those obstacles. Addressing substandard physical spaces, convoluted work flows, and poor ergonomics is one key. Research shows that improving the physical working environment for nurses boosts their satisfaction, and ultimately, direct patient care and clinical outcomes.

Ergonomic workstation and medication carts of all styles can help increase nurse comfort, reduce walking time, and allow nurses to engage more with patients and other members of the healthcare team.

The cumulative takeaway? When you improve the environment, you improve the outcomes.

Ergotron Telehealth Carts empower patients

sv4456t1-inuse

The telemedicine trend is exploding, with virtual consult services being the most well-known and popular among patients. The American Telemedicine Association estimates that half of all health care services will be delivered via telehealth within five years. The World Health Organization predicts the practice has the “potential to transform the face of health service delivery across the globe.” In fact, the global market for telemedicine is expected to top $34 billion by 2020.

So, what is telemedicine (or telehealth)? There are a number of definitions but they all point to the same general idea: Telemedicine is the use of medical information exchanged from one site to another via electronic communications to improve patients’ health status.

Surprisingly, telehealth as a phenomenon has been around since the late 1800’s, with the invention of the telegraph and telephone. During the Civil War, the military used the telegraph to order medical supplies and a few decades later, the telephone for medical consultations. The invention of the radio and television ramped up the healthcare applications until digital technology expanded them even further.

Patients have embraced telemedicine enthusiastically and here’s why:

1-They can access care easily from a tablet, smartphone or computer, meeting through a safe, secure, and confidential video connection. Surveys show that patients are just as satisfied with a virtual face-to-face visit as a live one.

2-Patients can connect with a qualified, board-certified health care provider right away, and get a diagnosis and treatment as needed. Some tests can even be conducted during a virtual visit and prescriptions can be ordered afterwards.

3-Patients get convenient care, when and where they need it, without the hassle of driving or waiting to be seen. Virtual consults are usually available 7 days a week, for extended hours, such as 8am to midnight.

4-In addition to being fast, easy, and flexible, virtual consults are more affordable. They can be charged to a patient’s insurance company or a credit card. Rates are less than an office visit; $39 is a common fee, though insurers may negotiate even lower rates for their members.

Ergotron Telemedicine Carts and Telepresence Carts combine the power to support onboard diagnostics and video-conferencing with StyleView® point-of-care carts. (See all our Telehealth Carts.) Healthcare organizations can rely on Ergotron’s more than 30 years of expertise and service to build a solution that matches their needs and budget.

Own your space, own your life

UoChesterStudyHow big is your office? Is it a tiny cubical or a part of an open plan benching system? Do you have a dedicated desk or plop into any available chair? Are you working from the comfort of home or are you alone in a corner office with a million-dollar view?

Whatever your office size or configuration, the area within your control is actually quite small.  Full-time workers spend forty percent of their waking hours sitting within a space no larger than their own height. For the average person, if they spread their arms out to their side at shoulder height, that measurement would be about five and a half feet in diameter from fingertip to fingertip (nails not included).

If those numbers seem bleak, don’t despair. There is a way to make the most of every inch and every minute while you are at work. Just stand–with a sit-stand workstation.

Sure, the media has been full of reports about standing desks, sedentary behavior, and how regular exercise alone isn’t enough to keep us healthy; but a lot of people, employees and employers alike, seem to be missing the point. Not because they’re immune to the health risks of prolonged siting, but because they are reacting to assumptions that side-track them from the truth that they have become accustomed to an unnatural way of working and indeed, living.

Some comment that standing at a desk is nothing new; some bristle at having “one more thing to worry about,” while others delight in pointing out that standing too long is just as bad as sitting too long.

Well, yes.

But what’s that got to do with you?

Given everything that you know about how it feels to be stuck at a computer for hours on end, why wouldn’t you consider standing? Especially in light of an episode called “Trust Me, I’m a Doctor” which aired last Thursday, October 17 on BBC Two television in the UK. The study, conducted by Dr. John Buckley at the University of Chester was built upon previous findings indicating that:

  1. Prolonged sitting causes damage to joints which can lead to inflammation, stress and chronic pain
  2. Prolonged sitting can lead to cardio-metabolic disease
  3. Sit-stand computer workstations have been proven by scientific research to be both feasible and effective at reducing sitting time in a work setting.

The BBC/University of Chester researchers found that both heart rate and energy expenditure were raised significantly by standing work. They speculate that over the course of a year’s work, if workers stood for three to four hours per day doing desk work, it would equate to an additional energy expenditure of 25,000 kcal (about 7lbs or 3 kg of human fat)!

Subjective evaluations found that 8 of 10 workers were very willing to stand doing work as long as they could have breaks and do some work sitting.

No least of all, the UK researchers stated that the simple act of performing desk work, while standing for greater than three hours after lunch, helps to lower blood glucose more quickly back down to normal levels.

The research is in…standing at the computer is both feasible healthier than sitting on its own. And the ability to modify your work surface height, depending on how you feel and the type of task you are doing gives you “decision latitude,” which in itself, is known to improve attitude and consequently, productivity.

Your office may be large or small, near to home or far away. With a sit-stand workstation, it doesn’t matter because you’re in charge. Own your work space. Own your life!

MEDICA beginnt

Nancy Gregson, Sr. Channel Manager @ Ergotron

MEDICA -show day 007Day 1 of the 4-day MEDICA event began this morning.  Norbert, one of our German Account Managers, joined me at the booth to beautify the carts for the show’s start at 10am.  After polishing the Ergotron presence in the booth, I left Norbert to walk the show and see what MEDICA had to offer.

Looking for carts and competitors, I saw a mattress warming cart.  Strange, but unique. Almost as strange as the mobile toilet.  I guess you can put anything on a cart.  There was an abundance of surgical instruments but nothing really differentiating them. I was spotted by the Man & Machine folks and we discussed upcoming shows and partnerships.

Stopping by one competitor, I was asked where I work. “Ergotron,” I said.

I was asked,“Are you scared? You should be.”

I laughed, “Nope, not at all.  Thanks for the brochure,” and I was on my way.  Another competitor did not have any literature out in their booth.  When I asked, I was told that I have to give them a card to get literature.  I handed my card and was told to leave.  I know who’s scared!

MEDICA -show day 010Our Ergotron and Dell booth was busy throughout the afternoon. I didn’t take this picture fast enough. Moments before these two gentlement were hugging the StyleView® cart.

The show goes on the next few days but my travels take me on to other meetings in the Netherlands. Auf Wiedersehen Deutschland!

It’s a HIMSS Cart Round-up

Nancy Gregson, Sr. Channel Manager @ Ergotron

It’s been a full day, beginning with cabling as the main topic at breakfast. Soon, the wall mounts were hung, and empty boxes stacked to make way for the cables and zip ties.

Once the video feed was live, the score from our new movie, StyleView®: B# at the Bedside, rang through Hall A (I could even hear it in the ladies room!).100_0906

Partners stopped by to get a sneak peak at Ergotron products heading to their booths the next morning.

And as the evening on the HIMSS range descended, both Steves, Jorge and Nate corralled all the point-of-care carts back into the booth.
