Teachers + philanthropists = #BestSchoolDay

20160211_102142

We came across something amazing for education recently – a surprise “flash funding” utilizing an online crowdsourcing site, DonorsChoose.org, to support our nation’s school kids. The campaign, #BestSchoolDay, brought together more than 50 celebrities, athletes, and philanthropists (such as Bill Gates) who fully funded 11,000 classrooms in 47 states to the tune of over $14 million.

Since 2000, DonorsChoose.org has been supporting teachers and students by making it easy to help a classroom in need. Their mission is to connect the public to public schools – so that students in every corner of this country have an opportunity to get a great education.

Though the one-day flash funding event took place on March 10th, you can still get involved. There are projects on the DonorsChoose.org site marked with a #BestSchoolDay match offer logo – that means you can double the impact of your donation.

Here’s a great example of a teched project with a match offer, called Chromebooks for Humanities. The request is for Chromebooks and an Ergotron charging cart for Mr. Woolums’s class at the Air Force Academy High School in Chicago.

Are you a public school teacher in need of funding? We recommend DonorsChoose.org as a good way to engage with community philanthropists and major corporations. The more people who know of your need, the better your chance of getting it met.  Start your first project here.

We know teachers are unsung heroes who open up so many doors for their students. That’s why we have educator resources on our website, including a grant writing kit, so that everyone has their #BestSchoolDay. Together, we can help kids do great things in the classroom, and beyond.

Cheers to our Stand-Up Pioneers

October was National Ergonomics month. People came from far and wide to jump, or more accurately, stand up to our Stand-Up Pioneers Facebook photo contest. Okay, well not really, but you get the idea. Our Stand-Up Pioneers were very excited about the opportunity to create and submit their DIY innovations to us. Stand-Up Pioneers are using laptops and desktops on everything from boxes to upside down garbage cans, to stacking their laptops on back of their seats.

Our two lucky winners are: Nikki and Kevin, both from Auburn, ME.

Kevin thinks outside the box, or in this case, on top of a bucket.

Kevin had this to say about his Stand-Up Pioneers experience:

Kevin_WorkStation
“I am absolutely loving my new Ergotron WorkFit-D, Sit-Stand Desk. Having the option to sit and stand has been absolutely amazing. The quality of this product is top notch and I would highly recommend Ergotron products to anyone.

Thank you Ergotron for being such a leader in the ergonomic field and for allowing those who work at a computer station to have the flexibility they need. I am very impressed.”

Kevin is now one happy pioneer!

You may have seen Nikki’s pic before from a previous blog post. Nikki claims to have stumbled on our Stand-Up Pioneers FB photo contest “by fate.” She previously worked beside a standup desk at her old job. Nikki emphasizes, “I couldn’t imagine going back to sitting all day.”

Nikki, Auburn ME

Nikki decided to steal a box from one of the offices new ergo chairs to make her stand up desk. She said that EVERYONE in the office got a good laugh at her “new” desk.

Now, Nikki says, “I’m slowly converting my company to become Stand-Up Pioneers one person at a time, AND my co-workers are going to be so jealous.” Well Nikki, I’m sure no one’s laughing at you now.

Are you a Stand-Up Pioneer? You could be.

Pioneers should be awarded. Enter Ergotron’s Facebook Photo Contest and you could be replacing your DIY workstation with a WorKFit system.

We support your enthusiasm to stand. We’ve been working with researchers to better understand why standing more throughout the day feels so good. We applaud like-minded individuals who are braving censure and ridicule, stacking monitors and laptops on milk crates, phone books, encyclopedias, scrap wood…in a creative bid for better health.

Now it is time to set aside the slivers. Take a pic of your DIY desk. Upload it to our contest page. Garner votes. Maybe you might be the lucky one to win the ergonomic set up to make all your previous critics squirm.

And even if you are behind in the game? Now is a great time to start.

Why We Need to Sit AND Stand

It isn’t enough to have a standing desk. You need the option to sit and stand throughout your day.

A few days ago I read a post on Hacker News from Mikael Cho the founder of ooomf declaring why he killed his standing desk

From his post I gleaned these reasons Mikael killed his standing desk:

  • Standing for long periods caused him pain
  • This pain distracted him from his work
  • His standing desk forced his body to take breaks when his brain wanted to work
  • He couldn’t stay ‘wired in’ and focused while standing

Mikael also mentioned the following items related to standing, productivity, exercise, health, and lifestyle:

  • His standing desk helped him stay focused during certain tasks like answering email
  • Sitting isn’t bad. It’s sitting for long periods of time without movement that’s the killer
  • When we don’t move, our risk of cardiovascular disease increases and our blood circulation drops
  • A standing desk may be one way to solve the sitting problem but it doesn’t solve the inactivity problem
  • In the book Blue Zones, longevity was linked to regular, low intensity physical activity
  • One community in Okinawa, Japan has one fifth the risk of colon and breast cancer and lives seven years longer than the average American. In their culture, people sit on the floor, causing them to get up and down thirty to forty times per day

Our mission at Ergotron is to offer high quality sit-stand workstations at an affordable price so that you have the option to sit or stand while you work.

The problem with Mikael’s desk is that it was a $22 standing only Ikea hack that didn’t offer the option to sit without re-configuring your technology. In this limited configuration, transition between standing/sitting is a productivity obstacle.

Having the option to easily sit or stand is critical to a great user experience.

Over the years since I first started using a sit-stand workstation I encountered many of the same issues Mikael faced. My legs got tired. I needed to sit to focus or get into flow mode. I found myself more productive standing going through email but needed to sit to get ‘into’ writing. Some days are different than other days. Some days I stand most of the day, other days I sit most of the day. Most days I am up and down, transitioning more than 10 times.

When at a desk for 6-8 hours a day, simply taking a break and standing for an hour to go through some emails relieves my muscle and joint stiffness.

With my WorkFit-D, using a single hand I can transition from sitting/standing while maintaining creative flow without re-configuring my screens, keyboard, or mouse.

But don’t kill your hack yet!

Are you like Mikael Cho, ready to kill your hacked standing desk? I say wait. Consider what a WorkFit configuration experience might do for you. Maybe a WorkFit D with the Dual Side-by-Side LX Arm configuration.  What, you’re a Macbook user? Think about the WorkFit-P for Apple. Whatever your scenario, we’ve got a sit-stand configuration to suit your style.

And if Mikael is reading this, I have an offer for you. You can find me at @solson.

October is National Ergonomics Month – Join us for two #ergochat’s

Heather Rouillard, Global eMarketing Manager @ Ergotron

heather_r sm (2)

Ahhhh, one of the greatest months of the year: October. Thankfully, it’s also National Ergonomics Month! One of the best times to help people pay attention to their daily activities and help them be more comfortable and productive.

To celebrate this month, we are teaming up with Humantech and co-hosting two different ergochat’s.

October 16: “Ask an ergonomist” – Ever wonder what’s actually happening to your back while raking, or shoveling snow? Maybe ergonomics still just doesn’t make sense?! We will have a certified ergonomist on the chat willing to take questions and discuss a broad range of ideas.

October 30: “What’s all the fuss about sit-stand?” – It’s the latest trend in office and home computing, but what’s the big deal? Should you sit or should you stand? And, what can you do if you don’t have the option to do both? Lucky for you, both Humantech and Ergotron come to the chat with information from different perspectives. You won’t want to miss this one.

Details: #ergochat is a Twitter chat. At 1PM CST on the dates listed above, jump on Twitter and join the conversation. Each tweet should include the hashtag (#ergochat), and you can follow along in a twitter search. After the hour is up, we will post the transcript over on the Computing Comfort microsite.

So why do you need to get involved? Well, those are two great ways to start. And, we will also be running a promo for a free WorkFit, sit-stand workstation of your choice. And, check back to the blog throughout the month for more posts on the topic!

The Future of #ergochat

Heather Rouillard, Global eMarketing Manager @ Ergotron

Over the last year, I have been hosting a weekly Twitter chat (#ergochat) at 1 PM on Wednesday’s with Carrie Schmitz.

Each week a different ergonomic topic was chosen and announced before the event. Several people joined the conversation each week, which lasted an hour. Topics ranging from the aging workforce to input devices were discussed.

Moving forward, the plan is that #ergochat will become a once a month Twitter chat. A topic will be decided and announced early in each month. Then, on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, at 1 PM CST, #ergochat will occur.

The hashtag will remain open for people to use whenever they want to tweet about it during the month.

Feel free to send any suggestions on topics, ideas about the future of #ergochat or anything else related to Heather Rouillard.

Be sure to follow the conversation on Twitter through @HeatherRou (me) and #ergochat.

The topic for October (Ergonomics Month) is “Sedentary behavior, the need for physical activity & the ergonomics of it all.”

I will be live tweeting/blogging from the Human Factors & Ergonomics Society 56th Annual Meeting (#HFES2012) & the Office Ergonomics Research Committee (OERC) Fall 2012 meeting later this month in Boston.

So, the first monthly #ergochat will be hosted live from the HFES event, on October 24th, and full of exciting new content!

Thanks to everyone who helped make the last year such a success!

Ergotron Customer Care Rocks (people on Twitter think so too)!

Heather Rouillard, Global eMarketing Manager @ Ergotron

I have the privilege of sitting next to the customer care department in the office, and quite often I find myself pausing from what I am working on, to overhear a conversation one of them is on. Quite frequently I think to myself how patient that person was, how carefully (yet quickly) they chose their words, and how professional the whole conversation was. Continue reading

Heather Rouillard, Global eMarketing Manager @ Ergotron

I really never thought that a product launch day could be so exciting. The world of social networking has dramatically changed the way I look at traditional marketing. Let me tell you why:

I got to be part of this awesome video production,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EV_i_mi—w

I get the choice to sit/stand whenever I want during the day,

I get to be part of a leading-edge informational group that helps other people feel better,

and I get to share all this with the world via social media avenues.

Now that’s a pretty exciting day for a digital native!!!
